Abstract

This report summarizes the results previously published on the radiometric ages of schistose rocks and associated intrusive igneous rocks in the extensive areas of the Central Alps in which regional metamorphism has been developed. The so called “oldcrystalline” simulates the evidence of the Caledonian events and at last it appears to have been formed in the late Paleozoic Variscan orogenic era. Furthermore, the Alpine orogeny is not to be disregarded. Besides a Precambrian metamorphism is supposed, but it could not be proved up-to-date. The Alpine intrusive igneous rocks exhibit a Variscan or Alpine age. The plutonic bodies of tonalite occurring along the Periadriatic Lineament took their present form in the Oligocene epoch. The interpretation of the regional metamorphic rocks of Pohorje Mountain is in general the same as that of the “oldcrystalline”. But the Rb-Sr age of 19 ± 5 m. y. determined for biotite from the Pohorje tonalite bears no relationship to the tonalite itself. By this age a Middle Miocene interval is indicated. However, from the deposits of the same age gravel, derived from tonalite, has been recorded. Consequently, the tonalite emplacement must be somewhat older than Middle Miocene. Most likely it owes its origin to the Oligocene magmatic intrusion.
