Stages of the Lower Devonian in Slovenia - the New Proposal

Abstract

In Slovenia, Croatia and in southenstern Bosnia the Lower Devonian stages Gedinnian, Siegenian and Emsian have been currently used as the standard stages of the Lower Devonian epoch. These stages are based on the classic development in the Ardenno-Rheinish region. Gray, brown or black micritic, partly (southeastem Bosnia) manganiferous conodont-rich limestones of western Yugoslavia indicate deeper water conditions, with exception of the upper part of the Lower Devonian where reef limestones occur. These rocks are very like the Lower Devonian limestones at Barrandi in Czechoslovakia. The author’s suggestion is to revise the nomenclature of the Lower Devonian stage names, following the decision of the Subcommision on the Stratigraphy: Lochkovian, Pragian and Emsian.
