Abstract

Though the uranium bearing Val Gardena beds of Žirovski vrh (Žiri peak) uranium ore deposit have little or no fossil remains, leastwise some pollen was expected in them. For this purpose a development crosscut in the uranium mine and a cored bore hole, started from surface, were sampled. A black to dark gray mudstone appeared to be pollen bearing. But a maceration, commonly applied, did not release palynomorphs from the host sediment. Subsequently the samples had to undergo miscellaneous procedures in order to provide various pollen types for determination and tabulation of their relative abundances. The pollen assemblage contains rather abundant monosaccate polen grains of Crucisaccites variosulcatus Djupina associated with a small number of Cordaitina grains. Bitaeniate forms of Corisaccites and Lueckisporites are presumed to occur, but could not be distinguished surely enough. A thorough sampling and corresponding preparation should be made to find a satisfactory explanation for the pollen assemblage occurring within the Val Gardena formation of Žirovski vrh.
