Abstract

Authors present a comprehensive review of finds of fossil turtles in Slovenia and some basic notions on their morphological and evolutionary characteristics. From the suborder Pleurodira in Slovenia there is the only species Sontiochelys cretacea Stache known which has been found in Cretaceous beds near Gorica. Ali other specimens belong to the suborder Cryptodira, and most of them were collected in previous century in Oligocene beds of Zasavje. Among them appears the important specimen of the holotype of Testudo riedli Hoernes and several specimens of soft-shelled turtles (Trionychidae) belonging to the genera Trionyx. Ali described Tertiary specimens are deposited in the Styrian provincial museum Joanneum in Graz, Austria, Carinthian provincial museum in Klagenfurt, Austria, Provincial museum in Celje and in Museal collection in Laško, both in Slovenia.
