Abstract

In the median part of the Velebit Mt. (SW Croatia, Yugoslavia) black limestones of the Zone Neoschivagerina craticulifera have been investigated. Numerous fossils (175 taxa) have been determined and arranged into the fossil communities. The relationship between the type of sediment and the composition of fossil community has been studied. It was concluded that, during the Murghabian, the investigated region represented a shallow marine carbonate platform, settled in subtropic climatic belt. Sea floor was overgrown with algal plains. At several places mud-mounds and patchreefs were created by fixosessile organisms. Sediments at the eastern edge of the zone were deposited in an intraplatform depression.
