A GIS based SINTACS model for assesing aquifer vulnerability

Abstract

Assessing aquifer vulnerability is very important because of optimization of restrictive measures in watershed protection area. This paper describes the procedure of aquifer vulnerability estimation and compilation of groundwater vulnerability map of Selniška Dobrava porous aquifer. The map presents areas of greatest potential for groundwater contamination on the basis of hydrogeological conditions and human impacts. Ali major geological and hydrological factors that affect and control groundwater movement (in unsaturated and saturated zone) were incorporated into SINTACS model of vulnerability map. A Geographical Information System (GIS) was used to create a groundwater vulnerability map by overlaying the available hydrogeological data. The resulting vulnerability map was then integrated with a map of land use as an additional parameter in the SINTACS model to assess the potential risk of groundwater pollution (Civita & De Maio 1997). Aquifer vulnerability was classified in six classes by interval values of SINTACS index from low (I) to very high (VI) vulnerability. The north part of Selniška Dobrava area is classified into low to moderate class (II, III). The south and west part, where the main aquifer is located, are classified into high aquifer vulnerability class (IV, V).
